7 Natural Solutions That Will Have You Thriving Through the Holidays
It’s easy to have a love-hate relationship with the holidays (sad, but true). During the stretch from Thanksgiving to the eve of December 31st, it’s a beautiful season full of friends, family, and get-togethers, but lack of sleep, one too many eggnogs, overindulgent meals, and a too-long stay at the in-laws can shift our focus from celebration to simply trying to cope.
From headaches to bellyaches, my clients have given me the full scoop on their most concerning ailments they experience throughout the ‘hap-hap-iest season of all’. Sweet treats and rich meals can be landmines for health-conscious people, yet no one wants to feel deprived, nor should they have to. We are human, after all. Social celebration with food and drink is equally as nourishing to your soul as that kale salad you had for lunch last week.
But this does bring us to the conversation of functional nutrition and the herbal remedies that we can utilize to therapeutically assist the body in times of imbalance. Personally, this is where I prefer to use nature as my proactive apothecary to support my body. In fact, my husband Ben and I even have an herbal medicine cabinet stocked to the brim with natural tinctures and formulas that synergistically work with our bodies and keep us from having to mask symptoms with OTC drugstore products.
So, today I’m going to give you a peek inside this cabinet, and share my top-seven supplements to help your body balance the stresses of the holidays, so you can embrace the spirit of the season and thrive, not just survive.
1. Control Blood Sugar and Cravings with Glucose Regulation Complex (GRC)
Are your sweet cravings out of control? The holidays can disrupt our eating patterns with plenty of foods that throw our body balance out of whack. GRC to the rescue. This blend of banaba leaf, chromium, taurine, magnesium, alpha lipoic acid will help to reduce sugar cravings and also stabilize blood sugar… so, we can indulge in grandma’s Christmas cookies, but also reduce the physical consequences of doing so.
How to Supplement: Take two capsules two times per day to help support gut lining from the potential overindulgences of the season. Get it here.
2. Reduce Stress with Stress Relief Complex
No one is built to work around the clock - that includes you, my friend. Through a synergistic blend of herbs, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, Stress Relief Complex helps combat stress and recover from burnout and depletion. The key adaptogen in this formula, ashwagandha, adapts to your body’s specific hormonal and stress-related needs, actually blunting your production of cortisol (your stress hormone), helping you feel more mellow.
How to Supplement: Take 1 caplet daily as needed - when you know you’re heading into a stressful family, work, or travel situation. Get it here.
3. Calm Digestion with Stomach Soothing Complex
Did you overindulge on all those finger foods at your holiday work party? Stomach Soothing Complex is a natural approach to helping your heartburn and indigestion woes. It can help you avoid, prevent and/or relieve stomach aches, gas, and bloating that may come along with the holiday season’s heavier meals. As a bonus, it also strengthens the stomach lining and promotes healthy microbial balance. Win-win!
How to Supplement: Take 1-3 tablets after meal to prevent indigestion or when you experience symptoms. Get it here.
4. Detox From Your Re-tox with Liver DTX Complex
One too many drinks last night? It happens! Luckily, this savior of a formulation can help you bounce back and give your liver a boost. The unique combination of botanical ingredients in Liver DTX Complex support the health and function of the liver in two ways. The extracts of milk thistle seed, Schizandra chinensis seed, and reishi mushroom have antioxidant properties, offer protection to liver cells, and stimulate liver cell repair and regeneration. Dandelion, turmeric, and artichoke extracts help maintain normal bile flow (needed for excreting toxic compounds from the body.)
How to Supplement: Take 3 caplets daily. If you know you will be indulging in adult libations, I highly recommend taking this before or after to help aid in liver detoxification. Get it here.
5. Avoid Indigestion with Optiflora® DI
Probiotics are your friend this holiday season! They optimize the digestive system, help with heartburn and indigestion, reduce gas and bloating, boost overall immune system function, and new research even shows they may enhance the ability to cope with stress and anxiety. Although I recommend taking a probiotic year-round for optimal well-being, I highly recommend it during the holiday season to keep your gut flora in balance.
How to Supplement: Take 1 capsule daily to build up gut health and help to keep your immune system strong all holiday season long. Get it here.
6. Boost Immunity with Vitalized Immunity
Vitamin C is crucial in boosting your immunity during the colder months. Vitamin C can be found in fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, parsley, citrus fruits, kiwis, and strawberries. For a quick boost, I use Vitalized Immunity, a fizzy citrus drink with the vitamin C equivalent of 16 oranges.
How to Supplement: Drop one tablet in 4-6 oz. of water. Let dissolve and drink. Get it here.
7. Rest Well with Gentle Sleep Complex (GSC)
Between travel, added stress, and late night parties, the holiday season can disrupt our natural sleep cycle and leave us feeling less than rested. Aim to keep a regular sleep schedule during the holidays to maintain balance, and if you need a little extra help, the GSC sleep formula helps you fall asleep and stay asleep, yet won’t affect daytime alertness like sleep medications can. GSC offers a unique combination of passion flower, German chamomile, and valerian to promote relaxation by quelling overstimulated nerve cells, while helping to synchronize our circadian rhythm, so that we are alert during the day and at rest during the night.
How to Supplement: Take 3 tablets before bed. Get it here.
So there you have it, seven of my go-to supplements to ward off the yuckies and help you feel merry and bright. Because who are we kidding, we all need a little help maintaining inner balance when it comes to digestion, stress, sleep, and detoxification — especially through the holiday season.
